A New Kind of MP for Coventry North West

Fighting the ‘Gig Economy’, Delivering Quality Jobs

As a Labour government, we must redistribute, close the gap between rich and poor, and ensure no-one needs to work more than one job to make ends meet.  Multinationals like Starbucks, Amazon and Uber need to be made to pay their tax and give their workers employment rights.

You’ve already seen me in the press and on the radio and TV, campaigning with UNITE and the GMB agains the worse excesses of the ‘gig economy’. My campaign exposing the loopholes that are unethically exploited by Uber even made it on the front page of a national newspaper. It is wrong that Uber are driving our local taxi drivers out of business by operating without a local licence, and undercutting the rigorous standards we expect of Coventry registered taxi drivers and their vehicles.

I’m also supporting the GMB as they highlight the lack of basic workers rights at Amazon. Every worker should have the right to trade union representation in their workplace – and its no surprise that we are hearing shocking stories about the health and safety breaches that result where unions are prevented from organising.

In my working life I spent 15 years as a Director, and then a Trustee of West Midlands employment and skills charity JobChange.  Through this work I ensured that the right support was on hand as many tens of thousands tackled their barriers to employment e.g. no or too few qualifications, lacking necessary computer and/or other vocational skills, illiteracy, lack of English language, mental illness, homelessness, domestic abuse.

As your MP I would draw on these insights, campaigning to help our government build an economy based on secure employment with fair working conditions.
